Album

This album captures the best of Carmen McRae's performances at a monthlong appearance at New York's Village Gate jazz club in November 1965. At the top of her form and employing her usual laid-back manner with lots of well-placed space between words and phrases, McRae delivers on a set of those songs that have a touch of irony she seemed to favor as her career and voice matured, with tunes by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley getting the heaviest play. On Don't Explain, the irony is so powerful that her voice takes on a wounded quality. McRae made this song part of. Album 1965 21 Songs. Carmen McRae. Jazz 1965. Sometimes I'm Happy Live. Carmen McRae cast her spell over me ages ago. The two albums on this CD show her at the peak of her powers, working before live audiences in the mid 1960s. The second Live & Wailing, 9 tracks from 1966 is a trio set, with Norman Simmons once again at the piano, but with Victor Sproles and Stu Martin on bass and drums. As excellent as this record is, I think people should be warned that it has precisely the same material as an earlier release in the Columbia Jazz M. Love for Sale - Carmen McRae.
